CLIMBING OL DOINYO LENGAI MOUNTAIN FROM LAKE NATRON

ABOUT OL DOINYO LENGAI CLIMB TOUR

Nestled in the stunning landscapes of northern Tanzania, Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano stands as a marvel of nature, attracting adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. Located near the vibrant Lake Natron, where hundreds of thousands of pink flamingos flock annually, Ol Doinyo Lengai is renowned not just in East Africa but globally for its extraordinary geological features. This active volcano is the only one in the world that produces natrocarbonatite lava, commonly known as “cold lava.” Unlike other types of lava, which are often red-hot and viscous, this lava is dark brown or black in its liquid state and flows as smoothly as water. Although it is termed "cold," it still reaches temperatures between 510°C and 600°C, which, while lower than typical lava temperatures, is far from truly cold.

Over the past century, Ol Doinyo Lengai has erupted approximately 15 times, with the most recent eruption occurring in 2013. Fortunately, these eruptions have been relatively small and have caused no harm to the surrounding Maasai villages, as the volcano is situated at a safe distance from human habitation.

Day 1: ARUSHA TO OLDONYO LENGAI

Your adventure begins in Arusha, where our driver will pick you up from your hotel in the morning and embark on a scenic drive to Lake Natron. The journey, though long, offers breathtaking views of Tanzania’s diverse landscapes. Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to observe local communities, including the iconic Maasai tribesmen, as well as encounter some of Africa's unique wildlife.

Upon arrival at Lake Natron Camp, after enjoying lunch en route, you'll check in and be welcomed by the serene beauty of the surroundings. In the afternoon, a guide will take you on an invigorating walking tour to the Ngare Sero waterfall. This trek through a gorge requires you to occasionally ford a stream, so we recommend wearing sandals to make the journey more comfortable. The day concludes with a drive to the lakeshore, where you can capture stunning photographs of Lake Natron's dramatic scenery before returning to the lodge for a well-deserved dinner and rest.

Days 2: TREKKING OLDONYO LENGAI AND RETURN ARUSHA

The real adventure begins in the early hours of the morning. At 1:00 a.m., our driver will take you to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, where your ascent begins. The climb is demanding, with the slopes of the volcano posing a significant challenge, particularly in the darkness of the night. It's crucial to follow your guide closely to ensure your safety.

The trek can take anywhere from 7 to 12 hours, depending on your fitness level and pace. The gradient is steep, and it’s advisable to take brief rests every 100 meters or so to acclimatize to the increasing altitude. A break for breakfast along the way will help you regain strength for the final push to the summit.

Upon reaching the edge of the crater at an altitude of 2,960 meters, you’ll experience a moment of awe. Here, you can actually hear the lava flowing within the crater of what the Maasai call the "Mountain of God." The descent, while easier, still requires caution. Many injuries occur during this phase as trekkers are often tempted to move faster, but it’s essential to remain vigilant and watch your step. As the sun rises, it’s also wise to swap your fleece for a sun hat to protect yourself from the intense heat.

After your descent, our driver will be waiting at the base with cold drinks to refresh you. A quick shower and lunch back at the camp will rejuvenate you before the return journey to Arusha, bringing your unforgettable Tanzanian adventure to a close.
