6:00 AM – Early Morning Pickup in Kigali
Your tour guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kigali at the crack of dawn. After a quick meet-and-greet and an overview of the day’s schedule, you’ll begin your scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park. Along the way, your guide will provide insight into Rwanda’s culture, history, and the conservation efforts surrounding the mountain gorillas. The journey takes approximately 2.5 hours.
8:00 AM – Arrive at Volcanoes National Park
You’ll arrive at the park headquarters in Kinigi, where you will be briefed by park rangers. The briefing will include important information on gorilla trekking guidelines, the park’s rules, and safety instructions. You’ll also be assigned to a specific gorilla family, based on your physical abilities and preferences for the hike.
8:30 AM – Begin the Gorilla Trek
The trek into the Volcanoes National Park begins promptly after the briefing. Guided by
experienced park rangers, you’ll enter the dense rainforest to search for your assigned gorilla group. The terrain can be steep and muddy, so be prepared for a physically moderate to strenuous hike. The trek duration varies, typically ranging from 1 to 4 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family.
11:00 AM – Encounter the Mountain Gorillas
Once the gorilla family is located, you’ll be given the opportunity to spend up to one hour
observing them in their natural habitat. Watch the gorillas as they interact, feed, play, and
interact with their family members. The silverback, the dominant male of the group, may also be seen leading his family or displaying his strength. This is a unique chance to capture stunning photographs and take in the profound beauty and social structure of these endangered creatures.
2:00 PM – Visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village (Optional)
After the trek, you’ll have the option to visit the nearby Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where you can explore Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage. Learn about local customs, traditional dances, and the ways the community has worked alongside conservation efforts to protect wildlife. This is an excellent opportunity to experience Rwanda’s vibrant culture.
5:30 PM – Depart for Kigali
You will begin your journey back to Kigali, arriving in the city by late afternoon or early evening. During the drive, enjoy the scenic beauty of Rwanda’s countryside, passing rolling hills, terraced farms, and villages. You will be dropped off at your hotel or a designated location in Kigali, concluding your 1-day gorilla trekking tour.
