ABOUT 5-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via Marangu Route - Kilimanjaro

The Marangu Route, also known as the "Coca-Cola" route, is the most straightforward and gentlest way up Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest and most established path, with sleeping huts in dormitory style that provide mattresses and pillows. However, guests must still bring their own sleeping bags. The huts have shared dining halls, basic washrooms, and toilets.

Day 01: Marangu Gate (1860m) to Mandara Hut (2700m)

>> You'll depart from your Moshi lodge after breakfast and head to the Marangu gate to begin your trek. After completing the necessary paperwork, you'll hike through the dense rainforest and may spot primates en route to the Mandara Hut. Following a break, your guide can lead you to the Maundi Crater for a stunning view of the Kenyan interior.

Day 02: Mandara Hut (2700m) to Horombo Hut (3700m)

>> Following an early breakfast, you'll depart from Mandara Hut and soon reach the timberline, entering the heath and moor zone. After 4-6 hours, you'll arrive at the Horombo Hut, situated at an altitude of 3700m and offering stunning views of Mawenzi, Kibo, and the vast plain of the Masai steppe.

Day 03: Horombo to Kibo Hut

>> Today's stage is challenging and lengthy. The well-constructed trail traverses the "Last Water Point," leading to the nearly vegetation-free plateau known as the "saddle," which connects the primary summit of Kibo with Mawenzi. After 5-6 hours, you'll arrive at the Kibo Hut, where an early evening meal awaits before retiring for a brief night's rest.

Day 04: Kibo Hut (4700m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Horombo Hut (3700m)

>> Today marks the "Big Day" - the summit stage. You'll embark on your final ascent at midnight, a lengthy and demanding climb. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb gradually gains elevation. Upon reaching Gillman's Point (5681m) at sunrise - the crater rim of Kilimanjaro - the warmth of the sun will replace the night's chill. After an additional 1-2 hour hike, you'll arrive at Uhuru Peak (5895m). Upon returning to Kibo Hut, a hot meal will be served, followed by a 1-2 hour break before descending to Horombo Hut.

>> The final stage leads through the heath and moor zone to Mandara Hut (2700m), where a hot lunch awaits. Continuing through the tropical rainforest, you'll arrive at Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m) after a 6-hour trek. After bidding farewell to your guides, a brief transfer will take you back to your Moshi hotel. There, you can enjoy a warm shower and celebrate your achievement of reaching Kilimanjaro's summit.
