Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
>> Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa 2,800m (9,170ft).
A three-hour drive from Moshi brings you to the Londorossi Park Gate, located on the western side of Kilimanjaro, for registration and payment of park fees, then drive to the trailhead at Lemosho Glades and start your trek through the rain forest. In places, the vegetation is so untouched that it grows right across the narrow track. The flora and fauna are richer here than on the other more popular routes through the rainforest. Today's trek will be along a little used track called Chamber's Route. In about 3—4 hours, you will reach your camp in the rainforest at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree).

Day 2: Mti Mkumbwa to Shira 1 Camp
>> Mti Mkumbwa to Shira 1 Camp 3,500m (11,500ft).
After breakfast and carrying a lunch box, start the climb across the remaining rainforest towards the giant moorland zone. The perfect stop for lunch is at the beautiful valley just outside the Shira Crater at around 3,050m (10,000ft). After lunch, you cross into the Shira Caldera, a high-altitude desert plateau that is rarely visited. Shira is the third of Kilimanjaro's volcanic cones, filled with lava from Kibo Peak. The crater rim has been decimated by weather and volcanic action. Today, you get your first close view of Kibo—the dramatic summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

After breakfast, continue hiking east across the Shira Plateau past the Shira Cathedral towards Shira 2 Camp. You only gain 210m (700ft) in elevation, which allows you to acclimate slowly to the altitude. The views of the plateau are nothing less than spectacular!

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Hut
>> Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Hut 3,900m (12,675ft).
Today is the last of the 'easy days.' It is a superb 6-hour hike. You pass the Lava Tower around the southern flank of Kibo and slowly descend to Barranco, a spectacular campsite at the foot of Kibo Peak, looming high above. Your camp is only 140m (465ft) higher than where you were last night, but our walk will have taken you just over 4,300m (14,000ft) today. Today is one of the most valuable days for acclimatization.

Day 5: Barranco Hut to Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp
>> Baranco Hut to Karanga Valley to Barafu 4,560m (14,950 ft).
After breakfast, your first obstacle is to breach the Barranco Wall, a 183m (600ft) rock. Once over the wall, the climb becomes easier and extremely beautiful, with fantastic views of the crags and crevasses of the jagged peaks on your left. Then, you descend to the Karanga Valley. Some folks with time restrictions do not stop here for an overnight camp.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
>> Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak 5,900m (19,340 ft) to Mweka Camp.
Dress warmly because we start climbing on the mountain's steepest and most demanding part around midnight. The moon will provide enough light, and we will reach Stella Point by sunrise (about 6 hours). At dawn, rugged Mawenzi is a thrilling sight from the crater rim, with the Kibo saddle still in darkness beneath you and the crater's ice walls looming ahead. If you feel strong enough, continue to Uhuru Peak (1—2 hours). This is the highest point in Africa and the world's highest solitary peak, 5,900m (19,340ft). This is the most challenging day that trekkers experience. You will have ascended 1,100m (3,600ft) and descended 2,200m (7,200ft) in 12—15 hours. Although the descent is far less tiring, having a little rest once in a while is a good idea as you continue down to Mweka Camp (3—4 hours from the top).
